Art and culture - introductione-mail this to a friend

Volunteers underpin the work of theatres, museums and galleries across the country. They take every conceivable role and can also be found in organisations offering workshops and support for people who might not otherwise be able to access the arts.

The articles in this section should give you an idea of what's on offer. From helping out behind-the scenes at a local theatre, to cataloguing books at a fashion museum.

Some opportunities, such as taking photographs for the Images of Britain project, require professional or keen amateur levels of skill and experience. Others might demand nothing more than enthusiasm or, as in the case of the Skylight Centre in London, social skills might be as important as artistic ability.

Volunteers in arts and culture organisations often find that they get a new perspective on their chosen field. Plus, as in the case with volunteers at festivals and events, they can get into things for free.

In a sector where the competition for jobs is often fierce, volunteering can definitely help you to get ahead. But whatever their initial motivation, the volunteers we've spoken to all agree that the main benefit of volunteering has been to be a part of something worthwhile. There is great camaraderie in the arts and a great sense of satisfaction in being part of a team that gets things done, be it putting on a show, mounting an exhibition, or helping people express themselves through painting.
